The Glass Pavilions are only two blocks from Healdsburg Plaza, the center of the town’s shopping district. Alongside the exceptional restaurants and notable tasting rooms, the surrounding streets are host to numerous boutiques specializing in men’s and women’s fashion and décor. Of particular note is Lulo, a shop and gallery focusing on playful but sophisticated contemporary jewelry and ceramics by independent designers and artisans. It’s an excellent place to find an extraordinary gift or a decorative object for one’s own home.
Beyond the shopping that short-term visitors find so appealing in Healdsburg, the town also provides admirably for those enjoying a longer stay. If the Glass Pavilions’ peaceful environs inspire headway on one’s reading list, the family-owned Levin & Co. Community Booksellers carries more than 2,500 fiction titles and is similarly well stocked in nonfiction and children’s books. A highly regarded regional chain, Copperfield Books offers its own fine selection right on the Plaza. For those cycling on trails or through the sprawling vineyards, bike enthusiasts will find themselves at home in Spoke Folk Cyclery, only two blocks away from the townhouses. Should the precise lines and neutral palette of the Glass Pavilions invite a calculated touch of color, Dragonfly Floral’s expertly designed arrangements and floral subscription service will fill that niche. Additional designer home goods and interior wares await at Anthem Home. For a further degree of relaxation, one might seek out the services of the nearby Spa Hotel Healdsburg or a house call from A. Wise Massage.
The thread of culinary excellence woven throughout Healdsburg’s fabric also emerges in its retail scene. Quail and Condor is a bakery that has won over the town with its breads and pastries, though many locals swear by the galettes and other sweets on offer at Downtown Bakery and Creamery. Children will clamor to visit Noble Folk Ice Cream and Pie Bar, which also supplies desserts for enjoying at home. For a savory bite, Journeyman Meat Company offers wood-fired pizzas in addition to well-marbled steaks and cured meats. Home chefs will also be grateful for the twice-weekly farmer’s market, held Saturdays on North and Vine Streets and Tuesdays in the Plaza, specializing in produce grown within twenty miles of Healdsburg.
Just to the south of Healdsburg lies a region uncommonly dense with excellent craft breweries and tap rooms. While this cluster of breweries currently centers around Santa Rosa, about fifteen miles away, its spiritual home might be said to lie right on Healdsburg Plaza. It’s there that Bear Republic Brewing Company, maker of the beloved Racer 5 IPA, got its start. While they’ve since moved on to a much larger production facility, Bear Republic today maintains a brewpub in Rohnert Park, about five miles south of Santa Rosa.
Even closer at hand is one of the two pubs associated with Russian River Brewing Company. Focusing on hoppy IPAs—but also including a variety of lagers, barrel-aged, and Belgian-inspired brews—their offerings are revered by beer fanatics. But none receives more attention than Pliny the Younger, a triple IPA released once annually and available only at their two brewery/pub locations, when lines are known to snake around the building beginning in the early morning. At other times of the year, one must be content with Pliny the Elder, a remarkable double IPA distinguished by its balance, crisp finish, and exquisite aromatics. The Windsor location of the Russian River Brewing Company is only a ten-minute drive from the Glass Pavilions.
Santa Rosa boasts no fewer than nine craft breweries, as well as several independent taprooms offering both local beers and specialties from afar. Not to be outdone by the wine, this area of Sonoma County is also a beer lover’s dream.
